All-Female Production (Fish)

All-female production is the rearing of fish stocks in which essentially 100% of individuals are female, used commercially in rainbow trout, salmon, and tilapia where females grow faster, mature later, or avoid the quality problems of early-maturing males. In salmonids the method exploits the fact that sex is determined by a male heterogametic XX/XY system: normal males produce X- and Y-bearing sperm, so fertilizing normal eggs with milt from sex-reversed XX neomales yields only XX female offspring. Because the sex-determining region of salmonids is small, the cross must be verified with genetic sex markers to exclude the occasional Y-bearing sperm. In tilapia, all-female or near-all-female stocks are produced by combining sex reversal with mating design or by using YY neomales to sire all-male broodstock for crossing. Operational benefits include 10 to 20% faster growth in species with female advantage, elimination of grilsing-related downgrading in salmon, and more uniform harvest lots. Risks are genetic erosion if a single neomale line dominates, and in some jurisdictions, regulation of the hormone step used to produce the neomales. All-female production sits at the applied end of sex determination research alongside monosex culture and triploidy programs.
