Example values: Distance 3,200 nm, Current speed 13.5 knots, Daily consumption at current speed 32 t/gün, Reduced speed 11.5 knots, Fuel price per ton 620 USD, Daily hire 14,000 USD. With these values the results are:
| Current voyage days | 9.88 days |
|---|---|
| Voyage days at reduced speed | 11.59 days |
| Fuel saving | 53,759 USD |
| Hire cost of extra days | 24,047 USD |
| Net effect | 29,712 USD |
| Break-even daily hire | 31,298 USD /day |
How to use: Slow Steaming Calculator
- Enter your own values: Distance, Current speed, Daily consumption at current speed, Reduced speed, Fuel price per ton, Daily hire.
- Choose the currency; money inputs are converted at an approximate rate.
- Results are calculated as you type: Current voyage days, Voyage days at reduced speed, Fuel saving, Hire cost of extra days.
- Check every step of the calculation in the formulas below.
How is it calculated?
- Current voyage days = [Distance] ÷ ([Current speed] × 24)
- Voyage days at reduced speed = [Distance] ÷ ([Reduced speed] × 24)
- Fuel saving = ([Current voyage days] × [Daily consumption at current speed] − [Voyage days at reduced speed] × [Daily consumption at current speed] × ([Reduced speed] ÷ [Current speed])^3) × [Fuel price per ton]
- Hire cost of extra days = ([Voyage days at reduced speed] − [Current voyage days]) × [Daily hire]
- Net effect = [Fuel saving] − [Hire cost of extra days]
- Break-even daily hire = [Fuel saving] ÷ ([Voyage days at reduced speed] − [Current voyage days])

FCRSOFT
FCRSOFT does this for you automatically
You don’t need to do the calculations and checks on this page by hand every day. FCRSOFT derives them all automatically from the records entered in the field.
- Fuel, port and canal costs are recorded for every voyage.
- TCE and voyage result are compared as estimate versus actual.
- Bunker purchases and consumption are tracked per voyage.
Frequently asked questions
How is Slow Steaming Calculator calculated?
Compare the fuel saving from slowing down with the hire cost of the longer voyage. The calculation uses Voyage Economics Engine: Calculates voyage result and TCE from distance, speed, sea and port days, fuel, port, canal and hire costs.
How is Net effect found?
Net effect = [Fuel saving] − [Hire cost of extra days]. With the example values (Distance 3,200 nm, Current speed 13.5 knots, Daily consumption at current speed 32 t/gün, Reduced speed 11.5 knots, Fuel price per ton 620 USD, Daily hire 14,000 USD) the result is 29,712 USD.
