How do I calculate CBM, and how much fits in a 20' and 40' container?
Visitor ·
We know our carton sizes. How many cartons fit, and which container do we need?

Accepted answer
CBM = length × width × height (in metres, per carton) × number of cartons. A 0.60 × 0.40 × 0.30 m carton is 0.072 CBM; 300 cartons take 21.6 CBM.
Approximate internal volume and practical load:
| Container | Internal volume | Practical load |
|---|---|---|
| 20' standard | ~33 m³ | ~25–28 m³ |
| 40' standard | ~67 m³ | ~55–58 m³ |
| 40' high cube | ~76 m³ | ~65–68 m³ |
Practical capacity depends on how carton sizes fit the inside dimensions, pallet use and stacking rules. Check the weight limit too: dense cargo fills a container by weight before volume. Reefer containers have less internal volume.
Use the CBM calculator and CBM to container.
