The example table has 5 rows; other values: Available DWT (after fuel etc.) 55,600 t. With these values the results are:
| Total cargo | 51,500 t |
|---|---|
| Volume used | 69,524 m³ |
| Total volume utilization | 98.1 % |
| DWT utilization | 92.6 % |
How to use: Vessel Cargo Calculator
- Enter your own values: Available DWT (after fuel etc.).
- Add or delete table rows as needed; totals update automatically.
- Results are calculated as you type: Total cargo, Volume used, Total volume utilization, DWT utilization.
- Check every step of the calculation in the formulas below.
How is it calculated?
- Volume used (each row) = [Cargo (t)] × [Stowage factor (m³/t)]
- Total volume utilization (each row) = [Cargo (t)] × [Stowage factor (m³/t)] ÷ [Hold volume (m³)] × 100
- Total cargo = [Σ Cargo (t)]
- Volume used = [Σ Volume used]
- Total volume utilization = [Σ Volume used] ÷ [Σ Hold volume (m³)] × 100
- DWT utilization = [Σ Cargo (t)] ÷ [Available DWT (after fuel etc.)] × 100
Ship calculations are estimates based on standard formulas. Loading, stability and draft decisions must be based on the ship’s approved documents and loading computer.

FCRSOFT
FCRSOFT does this for you automatically
You don’t need to do the calculations and checks on this page by hand every day. FCRSOFT derives them all automatically from the records entered in the field.
- DWT, TPC, draft and capacity data are stored on vessel cards.
- Certificate and document expiry dates are tracked, with warnings before they lapse.
- Voyage estimates use vessel data automatically.
Frequently asked questions
How is Vessel Cargo Calculator calculated?
Calculate volume used, hold utilization and total cargo from cargo quantity and stowage factor per hold. The calculation uses Vessel Hydrostatics Engine: Calculates DWT, displacement, draft, trim, TPC and MCT relationships with standard naval formulas; results must be checked against approved vessel data.
How is Total cargo found?
Total cargo = [Σ Cargo (t)]. With the example values (Available DWT (after fuel etc.) 55,600 t) the result is 51,500 t.
How is Total volume utilization found?
Total volume utilization = [Σ Volume used] ÷ [Σ Hold volume (m³)] × 100. With the example values (Available DWT (after fuel etc.) 55,600 t) the result is 98.1 %.
Worked example: Vessel Cargo Calculator
Example values: Available DWT (after fuel etc.) 55,600 t. Total cargo: 51,500 t; Volume used: 69,524 m³; Total volume utilization: 98.1 %; DWT utilization: 92.6 %.
Is Vessel Cargo Calculator free?
Yes. The tool is free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser; the data you enter is not stored.
Can FCRSOFT do this calculation automatically?
FCRSOFT stores DWT, TPC and draft data on vessel cards and uses it automatically in voyage estimates. You can try the Fleet & Vessel package in the live demo without installing anything.
Do the results replace official ship calculations?
No. Ship calculations are estimates based on standard formulas. Loading, stability and draft decisions must be based on the ship’s approved documents and loading computer.
