Telemetry and SCADA in RAS Plants
Telemetry and SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems are the control backbone of a recirculating aquaculture system, linking hundreds of instruments, dissolved oxygen, pH, ORP, temperature, level, flow, pressure, and pump status, to programmable logic controllers that execute automated responses and to operator dashboards that supervise the whole plant. In RAS the stakes are higher than in flow-through farms because a pump or oxygenator failure can kill a full tank of fish within tens of minutes: automated interlocks start backup blowers when dissolved oxygen falls, divert flow when a drum filter plugs, and shut feeders on any critical alarm. Telemetry extends this supervision across sites, streaming historian data to cloud dashboards so that off-site engineers can diagnose trends and managers compare plant performance. Design priorities mirror the risks: redundant sensors on life-support parameters, fail-safe valve and pump states that default to safe conditions on power or signal loss, and alarm management that suppresses nuisance trips while guaranteeing critical ones page a person 24/7. Cybersecurity is increasingly a licensing concern, as networked plants are attack surface; segregated control networks and vendor access logging are now standard expectations. Well-run SCADA turns a RAS from a fragile stack of machines into an observable, defensible production system.
