What production tracking answers

At any moment, a farm manager needs to answer a few basic questions for every batch: how many fish are there, how big are they, how fast are they growing, how many have been lost and why, and when will they reach harvest size? On many farms these answers live in different places, mortality on a paper form, weighings in a spreadsheet, feeding in another, and combining them takes time. Production tracking software keeps them together for each batch, so the answers are current and consistent.

The batch history

  • Stocking: date, number, average weight, source and unit.
  • Every movement: transfers, splits, grading, partial harvests.
  • Mortality: number and cause, by day.
  • Sample weighings: average weight and, where recorded, size distribution.
  • Feeding: amounts and feed lots, linked to FCR.
  • Health: treatments and observations.

From this history the system shows the count, average weight and biomass of each batch over time, without manual recalculation.

Growth curves and harvest forecasts

Sample weighings produce a growth curve for each batch. Comparing it with earlier batches of the same species and season shows whether growth is on track. The current growth rate also gives a forecast of when the batch will reach target weight and how much biomass it will yield. Updated after every weighing, the forecast supports sales and processing plans and avoids promising buyers dates or volumes the fish cannot deliver.

Loss control

Mortality is recorded with its cause, and periodic reports show rates by batch, unit, cause and period. Patterns stand out: losses after handling, rises in a particular season, or higher mortality in batches from one juvenile source. Because mortality also corrects the fish count, the biomass on which feeding is based stays accurate.

Reports that compare like with like

Comparisons are only useful between similar batches: same species, size class and season. Production tracking makes it possible to group batches this way and to compare growth, survival and FCR fairly. Over time, these comparisons show which practices, sites and juvenile sources perform best.

Getting started

Current batches and their history can be migrated from spreadsheets during onboarding. Field staff record daily events by phone, and managers use the reports. A process analysis at the start defines units, batches and reporting needs.

Frequently asked questions

Can a batch be split across several cages?

Yes. Transfers and splits are recorded, and each part keeps the history of the original batch.

Is FCR included?

Yes. FCR is calculated from feeding and weighing records for each batch and unit.
