Fecal Waste Output Estimation

Fecal waste output estimation predicts the solid waste a fish population will generate, usually as kg feces per ton of feed or per ton of biomass produced per cycle. The standard approach combines feed intake with apparent digestibility: fecal dry matter roughly equals feed dry matter intake multiplied by (1 - overall feed digestibility). With modern extruded feeds at 80-88% dry matter digestibility, fecal output is about 120-200 kg per ton of feed, versus 300-500 kg for low-digestibility cold-pelleted feeds. Refinements split output into organic (carbon, nitrogen residues) and mineral (ash, phosphorus) fractions using ingredient-level digestibility coefficients. The estimate matters because fecal solids drive sedimentation under cages, clog biofilters in RAS, and raise suspended solids in flow-through systems; knowing the load sizes oxygen demand, sludge removal, and discharge permits. Coupled with nitrogen and phosphorus retention models, it also underpins environmental carrying-capacity assessments required by regulators for new site licenses. Operationally, farms use waste estimates to choose feed quality tier: the price premium of a high-digestibility feed is frequently recovered through lower cleaning costs, better water quality, and 0.1-0.2 units of FCR improvement rather than through growth alone.
